Equitable Climate Adaptation

ICLEI Canada’s Equitable Climate Adaptation report equips local governments with the tools and considerations needed to ensure that climate adaptation planning benefits all members of the community—particularly those most vulnerable to climate impacts. The publication highlights how equity considerations must be integrated into each stage of adaptation planning, from risk assessment to implementation, to avoid exacerbating existing inequalities.

Through real-world case studies, the guide explores strategies for identifying and engaging marginalized groups, understanding the disproportionate impacts of climate hazards, and embedding equity metrics into resilience planning. It emphasizes that equitable adaptation not only addresses fairness in process and outcomes but also strengthens the overall resilience of municipalities by ensuring that all residents are better prepared to withstand and recover from climate-related challenges.
